LEWISTON — Whether it’s to shake off the cobwebs of the night before, or just a good opportunity to get out and about, the annual First Day Hikes at Hells Gate State Park commence here Jan. 1.

Compass Points: week of Dec. 29-Jan. 4
Scores of people kicked off their New Year Jan. 1, 2016, by getting outside, including these folks (and their dogs), seen at the annual First Day Hikes event at Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston.

Guided or unguided hikes to the basaltic rock formations on the south end of the park will begin about 10 a.m. and end about 2:30 p.m.

Attendees are asked to check in at the Lewis & Clark Discovery Center inside the park for hiking maps. Pets are welcome but must be leashed at all times, and hikers should dress appropriately for the weather and carry water.

Complimentary chili, chowder, coffee and hot chocolate will be served at the center during the event.

The park is at 5100 Hells Gate Road. Park entrance is free with an Idaho State Parks Passport or $5 per vehicle and there is no charge for hiking.
