Ask any librarian and they’ll tell you reading is fun. The trick is getting the right book in the hands of the right reader.

It’s what librarians do best and the long hours of summer are a great time to find your match. Here’s some tips for making summer reading happen in your house:

LIBRARY: Use your library. Let your kids go wild and check out lots of books. Summer reading programs at area libraries offer an array of free activities to keep kids thinking while school is out of session.

CHOICE: Let your kids choose the books that they read (but the librarian is always there to help).

TIME: Kids need opportunities for reading. Make sure they’re not filling all their time with TV and video games.

TECHNOLOGY: Your library provides free eBooks for Kindles, iPads, and Nook reading.

CONVERSATION: Ask your kids to tell you about the books they are reading – talking about what they are reading builds comprehension and important conversation skills.
