History set on Pomeroy football teams offers stories from a century of spirit

Pomeroy has never had a state championship football team but in a century of varsity games there are more than a few stories worth telling.

For instance, when the team formed in 1912 it took three days to travel to Dayton and back, said Gary Bye, author of the two-book set “From the First Whistle” and “To the Final Gun,” a history of Pomeroy football.

“It’s a story about the kids and men that blended together to create a team and some of the adventures they went through,” Bye said.

The book covers coaches, players and teams from 1912 to 2015. Bye, a farmer and former magazine writer and photographer, spent 10 years collecting information and anecdotes. He was inspired by stories about his wife’s grandfather, Cecil Mast, one of the town’s first football players. Bye played football for Pomeroy as did his three sons. Football remained a part of their lives. Two of his sons played

college football at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and one is the head coach at Clarkston High School.

Bye will sign his books from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at And Books Too in Clarkston. They are $25 each but are made to be read as a set, he said. One contains stories and the other contains facts. The set is $40.
