The winner of the July 13 Picture This challenge is Rachel Webber of Pullman, who was the first (and only) person to correctly identify the photo above as a close-up of the Codger Pole in Colfax.
The 65-foot-tall piece of chain saw art was erected in 1991 to commemorate one of Colfax’s biggest football games, a 1988 rematch celebrating a 1938 game between rivals Colfax and St. John. The 51 players in the 1988 game were in their 60s and 70s and the cedar logs are carved with their faces. A bearded “codger” sits at the top. The pole was carved by California artist Jonathan LaBenne.
