Lewiston seeks artists to design benches and bike racks for downtown

Proposals for artist-designed benches and bicycle racks are being sought for a streetscape project in downtown Lewiston.

In total, 20 benches and eight bicycle racks will be installed. One or more artists may be chosen for the project. Artist proposals will be accepted until June 15 by Beautiful Downtown Lewiston. Details and documents can be found online at www.downtownlewistonstreetscape.com.

Between benches and bicycle racks the project could showcase work by up to 28 different artists, said Courtney Brockett, design services coordinator for Beautiful Downtown Lewiston, in a prepared statement.

The benches and racks are to be constructed between August and October and installed in November, pending the street reconstruction timeline. The public is invited to begin commenting on the submitted proposals June 20. Public comment will be taken into consideration when final artists are selected.

The project is part of the Streetscape Design Initiative, a component of the First and Fifth Streets rebuild project geared toward increasing economic vitality in the downtown Lewiston district. Four design projects are planned as part of the Initiative. Others are entryway pieces and a library focal point piece.

Beautiful Downtown Lewiston, a non-profit organization, is managing the Streetscape Design Initiative, in coordination with TD&H Engineers and the Urban Renewal Agency.
