Downtown Lewiston will debut its new look, and library, with a full day of events Saturday. Festivities mark the end of the First and Fifth Street Rebuild Project, the grand opening of the Lewiston City Library and the start of summer with the Farmer’s Market and a new concert series.
Lewiston City Library Grand OpeningFifth Street in front of the library will be closed between Capital and D Streets for the library’s grand opening from 11-3 p.m. There will be crafts, games and prizes for kids; a bouncy house; live music inside and outside; free refreshments; and tours upon request.
A first-day issue stamp and envelopes featuring the library building will be sold by the Friends of the Lewiston Library as a fundraiser. Retired postmaster Ed Baldus will stamp the envelopes inside the library.
Photos will be available with the library’s new mascot, a steelhead salmon. Pictures with the fish will be available on the hour in the library conference room.
Free shuttle rides to the library will be available from Sacajawea and Jenifer Junior High Schools. The shuttle will unload and pickup in front of the library on D Street. A complete shuttle schedule is available below. The first 250 people who use an alternative mode of transportation to the opening will receive a free tote bag from Beautiful Downtown Lewiston.
Downtown Art Tours
From 2-4:30 p.m. Members of Beautiful Downtown Lewiston will lead walking tours of the 25 artworks installed during the downtown remodel — from the large mosaics by Spokane’s Melissa Cole to colorful bike racks and benches by 13 Northwest artists. Tours will stop at more than a dozen individual pieces and will leave on the hour from the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History at 415 Main St.
Farmers Market and Sound Downtown
The Lewiston Farmers Market starts its season from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday in the D Street Parking lot. This is a new day for the market previously held on Wednesdays.
Across the street a special four-hour concert will kick off Sound Downtown, a free Saturday night concert series running through Aug. 31 in Brackenbury Square. From 4:30-8:30 p.m. the LCSC Jazz Band will perform followed by the blues band Hard Travelin.’
Sound Downtown concerts are free and will typically run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The weekly concert series replaces last year’s monthly Alive After 5. Bands to perform this summer include the Singing Mountain Man June 29, Flight Edition on July 20, 7 Devils on Aug. 3, and the Katz Band on Aug. 17.
Opportunities to tip the musicians will be provided and encouraged. Food and beverages will be for sale by Lewiston Farmers Market vendors.
