Anyone who watches a game show wonders at some point what it would be like to be the contestant up on the stage.Friday, at one of the region’s more unusual fundraisers, “The Price is Right Downtown,” you can find out.
The Beautiful Downtown Lewiston event is styled after the classic TV game show with everything from a local version of Rod Roddy calling contestants to “Come on down,” to life-size versions of games like Plinko and the Big Wheel.
The prizes, donated by local businesses, heighten the tension. Last year, prizes included a Palm Springs vacation. This year’s showcase prizes are from Cornerstone Interiors and Inland Cellular. Since people have to guess the price of showcase prizes to win them, they are kept secret until the evening’s Showcase Showdown, said Erika Stricker, events and promotions manager for the nonprofit group.
This year’s event takes place at the former Sports Authority adjacent to the Red Lion Hotel. All attendees receive a name tag and are entered to be randomly drawn as a contestant. The night starts with a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres and floor games with the show at 6:30 p.m. In total, 24 people will be called to the stage, Stricker said. In each round, contestants guess the prices of items, and those who are closest, without going over the actual retail price, win prizes and move on to the next round for games like Hole in One, Cover Up and the Dice Game. Just like on TV, people in the audience yell their opinions to people on stage.
“There’s lots of audience participation,” Stricker said.
This is the seventh year of “Price is Right Downtown” and it’s Beautiful Downtown Lewiston’s only fundraiser, Stricker said. Proceeds help pay for free events downtown throughout the year. These include the summer concert series Sound Downtown, Pumpkin Palooza and the upcoming Hometown Pep Rally kicking off the Avisa-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston.
