While planting onions at my house on the evening of May 12, reader Benjamin Harlow saw this juvenile Cooper’s hawk land on the chicken coop roof. We had been losing some recent chicks and this was the likely suspect. I threw a dirt clod towards it with a horrible miss and the clod happened to land right where the chicks were hiding making them all run. Instantly the hawk dove down and grasped one. I thought it was dead for sure, but I heard a peep from the chicken and rushed over. The hawk was winded from the scuffle and I was able to get close for a photo with the chicken playing dead. As I got closer, the hawk flew away and the chicken ran to safety seemingly unscathed.
