CLARKSTON — The Clarkston Valley Art Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary Saturday by welcoming the community to the center for cake, punch, face painting and art auctions.

The money raised from the event will be used to help the center replace its roof.

Helen Scheibe, who served as a board member for the center from 1967-98, fondly remembers the building’s transformation from a Five and Dine restaurant to its current state.

“When I was in school, this building was a Five and Dine,” Schiebe said. “I’ve seen this place go through two major remodels, and I’ve seen the talent come in and out of this center. It’s amazing.”

Classes at the Art Valley Center bring in aspiring artists from near and far, including Moscow, Pullman and Grangeville.

The center is completely operated and governed by a staff of volunteers. Art Valley Center Board Secretary Robin Harvey said memberships and donations keep the center going.

“People are more than welcome to make donations at the celebration, but it’s also important to note that they can also make donations any time they want,” Harvey said.

The Art Valley Center is located on Main Street in Clarkston and has even outlasted some businesses. Ivy Breen, a board member, said she believes the center’s long-lasting impact proves the importance of art in a small town.

“We needed a place to gather,” Breen said. “Art is mankind’s most enduring creation.”

Vikki Wayne, a former board member, is optimistic when looking toward the next 50 years.

“I’ve been involved with this place for 20 years,” Wayne said. “It will continue to bridge younger and older artists together.”
