Americans like our pepperoni, sausage and veggies. Some weirdos will go way out there and order pineapple and ham or, heaven forbid, a pizza with fruit on it.
But do just a little bit of poking around online and you'll find a strange, dark world of super-weird pizza toppings. Now I've never tasted any of these myself, but I think my uninformed opinion as a self-proclaimed pizza expert should be sufficient - these are all really weird and probably gross.
1. Squid ink
Some people prefer white sauce over red sauce on their pizza. But what about squid ink? This is apparently a Japanese pizza featuring, yes, actual squid ink in place of pizza sauce. It is often topped with squid chunks and no cheese. I think the weirdness of this speaks for itself.
2. Peanut butter and jelly
That's it. Just PB&J on a crust. I hardly think this deserves to be called pizza considering it's basically just a very large, very round open-faced sandwich. But who am I to judge?
3. Smoked reindeer
Apparently this is what happens when Santa is no longer happy with the performance of his sleigh-pullers. Kotipizza Oyj, the largest pizza chain in Nordic countries, is known for its smoked reindeer pizza. The kid in me just finds this particular topping very, very sad.
4. Cicadas
If you aren't in the know, cicadas are cricket-like insects common in temperate climates. They are very loud and, if you've ever been anywhere in the Southern part of the United States during the summer, you've heard their buzz-like chirp. Also, apparently, they are something people put on pizza. Now I am just as annoyed by them as the next person, but come on is it necessary to eat them?
5. Bananas and curry
A Swedish pizza, it's just like it sounds. Banana slices and curry. I like curry - and I like bananas. But something just feels wrong about putting them together on top of a pizza. It just isn't natural.
