This work in gouache, a water-based paint with an opaque finish, is by University of Idaho junior Molly Klingler, of Moscow, a first-time participant in the Starving Artist Show.
A ramen cup, that budget-friendly college student repast, again is the logo for University of Idaho Art + Design’s Starving Artist Sale, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Bruce M. Pitman Center, 709 Deakin Ave., Moscow.
This year’s ramen cup artist, 2024 UI bachelor of fine arts graduate Olivia Pham, incorporated a nod to the blue and white decorative tableware featured in her native Vietnam, according to a show news release.
The show, presented by University of Idaho Art + Design graduate students, was started last year by UI Master of Fine Arts graduate student Jill Kyong “to provide art students with a firsthand experience in marketing and selling their art,” according to the news release. Proceeds help graduate students offset the expenses of mounting their MFA thesis shows.
Coinciding with the university’s Parent and Family Weekend, the show includes 65 student, alumni and community artists selling ceramics, prints, paintings, wood and fiber arts, stickers, drawings, jewelry, caricatures and henna art.
Cash awards are given for best student art and best displays, and three artists will earn the opportunity to sell their work at Moscow Contemporary’s gift shop in the Palouse Place Mall.
Admission to the show is free, and free parking options include the Pitman lot, Vandal Bookstore lot and on the street.
