Longtime Lewiston Civic Theatre actor and recent Clarkston High School graduate Ethan Smith recently won a so-called “Tony Award of high school” in Washington state.

Smith won a Fifth Avenue Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Edward Bloom in Clarkston High School’s spring musical “Big Fish.” The June 6 awards ceremony in Seattle recognized the best in musical theater from high schools around the state. Clarkston was nominated in several categories.

“I was pretty shocked,” said Smith, 18, who performed a medley at the ceremony with his fellow nominees.

Smith will not compete at nationals in New York City because he has a scholarship to attend a Broadway Dreams Foundation summer camp in Los Angeles at the same time. Instead, he passed the opportunity on to another nominee.

In the coming year, Smith said people can expect to see him in Lewiston Civic Theatre productions while he attends Walla Walla Community College in Clarkston. In the future he plans to pursue performance studies at an East Coast school with a goal of being on Broadway.
