A New Jersey-based nonprofit organization is attempting to catalogue the work of painter Mary Burnett Kirkwood, a former Moscow resident who died in 1995.
The effort is being led by John Kirkwood, her nephew and former student. He is a director for the nonprofit group, World One Assist.Burnett Kirkwood was an art professor at the University of Idaho from 1930 to 1970. A number of her commissioned portraits are at UI, where there is also a scholarship in her name. She was a member of the Idaho Art Association, the Boise Art Association, the national Art Education Association and the Moscow Fine Arts Club, along with being a charter member of the Washington, D.C., National Museum for Women in the Arts. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Montana and a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Oregon before going on to complete graduate work in Stockholm, Sweden and Paris.
