'The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter' lets you enjoy great outdoors on Netflix

Plugged In: “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter”

By Kaylee Brewster

“The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” is a movie that showcases the joys of the great outdoors.

Buck Ferguson (Josh Brolin) is a hunter who makes DVDs about his adventures with Don (Danny McBride). This time Buck is taking his son Jaden (Montana Jordan) on his first hunting trip to bag his first deer.

Of course, things don’t go as planned.

Jaden is more focused on calling his girlfriend, listening to music and showing off his parkour skills than taking up a rifle. Buck is overly concerned about getting his son to love hunting as much as he does. Don is just there to capture it all on video.

There are few movies about hunting and even fewer that are fun or funny. There are plenty of laughs here through dialogue and situations characters find themselves in.

While “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” doesn’t shy away from hilarity, it also deals with some dramatic themes: tradition versus modernity, outdoor life versus city life, and most of all, fathers and sons.

Brolin and Jordan work well as father and son, making those relational moments emotional and authentic.

If you’re itchin’ for hunting season to start, perhaps “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” will hold you over until you can go out yourself.
