Youth ages 13 to 20 can explore writing and hip-hop theater at a free workshop from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Asotin County Library in Clarkston. Participants will explore writing and performing poetic narratives with Myrlin Hepworth, a spoken-word artist who lives in Phoenix, Ariz.
In the workshop, students will write about their lives and learn how to perform their poems through a variety of exercises. An open mic at 6 p.m. will give them a chance to showcase what they’ve learned. While the workshop is limited to specific age groups, anyone can attend the open mic.
Hepworth is a 2005 Lewiston High School graduate. For the last decade he’s made his living as a full-time artist teaching poetry, writing and music around the nation. The Arizona Humanity Council recognized him with its Rising Star Award for his work as a youth advocate, and he has been featured on NPR’s “Alt.Latino” podcast. His visit is being paid for by a series of grants. He will be working with students at Lewiston High School earlier in the week. More information is available by contacting the library at (509) 758-5454.
