’Tis the season for cheesy Christmas movies, and thankfully Netflix has not one but two that’ll satisfy your holiday movie cravings.
“A Christmas Prince” and its sequel, “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding,” are about Amber (Rose McIver) a reporter who goes undercover as a tutor to discover the inside scoop on a playboy prince (Ben Lamb) and his coming coronation.
If you think the prince and the reporter falling in love is a spoiler, you obviously don’t know how these movies work. As the title suggests, the sequel is about the royal wedding of Amber and Prince Richard. Amber struggles to find a balance between the traditions of the royal family and her own tastes and interests.
Oh, and in both of these movies there’s a slight Christmas backdrop that conveniently allows for Christmas parties, decoration mishaps, snowball fights ending in almost kisses and a cold winter’s evening walk to reveal a character’s true thoughts and feelings.
I originally only watched because McIver is the star of one of my favorite television shows, “iZombie.” Her TV performance is excellent, and in “A Christmas Prince,” it is as good as the script allows. The story and dialogue is full of schmaltz -- but then again, it’s supposed to be.
“A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding” is a bit better and reminds me of “The Princess Diaries,” in a Hallmarkian Christmas movie sort of way.
Corny Christmas specials are part of the holiday season. Whether you or not you enjoy them, you can’t avoid them. “A Christmas Prince” and “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding” are palatable options, as long as you’re not a Grinch about it. If you’re a Christmas romance movie lover, then you will definitely need to add these to your list.
