Music from the 1980s is trending these days and one of the bands riding the wave of popularity is Loverboy, which will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Clearwater River Casino outside Lewiston. If you or someone you know thinks they know the band here’s a quiz to put their claim to the test:
1. What country did Loverboy sprout from? Answer: You can add the band to a list of Canadian imports that includes peanut butter, Neil Young, egg cartons and the electronic wheelchair. All the major U.S. record labels failed to see the Calgary band’s potential and the band ended up signing with Columbia Records Canada. Its debut album sold 4 million worldwide and the group was one of the first to be featured on MTV. 2. List five Loverboy staples. Answer: The band’s most popular songs include “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “Hot Girls in Love,” “Heaven In Your Eyes,” “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over,” “Working for the Weekend” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.”
3. What Loverboy song featured in a popular “Saturday Night Live” skit where comedian Chris Farley competed against Patrick Swayze in a Chippendales audition? Answer: “Working for the Weekend” was the music for the 1990 skit. The song came out in 1981 on the album “Get Lucky.”
4. Who did Loverboy frontman Mike Reno blame for ruining the band’s career?
Answer: Nirvana. In a 2011 interview Reno told “Rolling Stone,” “You just looked at the charts, and it was all negative lyrics — and people dressed up like they’re lumberjacks. The Seattle grunge thing just took over everything.”
