Down the hatch: Brad Byers of Pullman swallows a sword.

Sword swallower Brad Byers plans to attempt to break the world record for most swords swallowed and twisted Saturday at the Palouse Mall in Moscow.

The current record is 10 swords, set by Byers in the 2000 edition of "Guinness World Records." The swords were 27 inches long. He remembers his esophagus feeling so full he could see the sword handles beating with his heart. He has swallowed and twisted 11 during practice, he says, but must have the act publicly recorded to set a new record.

Byers lives in Pullman and is a 1978 graduate of Moscow High School. He performs sideshow acts around the world and has appeared on David Letterman, NBC's "America's Got Talent" and other shows. A picture of him swallowing swords became an official postage stamp in Grenada.

Byers plans to attempt the feat at 3 p.m. in front of Bed, Bath and Beyond in the mall.
