Last week, President Donald Trump announced he was directing the Pentagon to establish a new military branch in space called Space Force.
We asked our 360 readers on Facebook what fictional character they would pick to lead this proposed branch of the military. There were a lot of good nominations for the position.
After some deep thought and some research, I present my picks for Space Force director.
Princess Leia/General Organa
From the Star Wars Universe
Qualifying skills: She’s got diplomatic expertise and she’s a battle-tested general. She knows how to run a rebellion and doesn’t let family get in the way of her actions and beliefs.
Potential problems: She’s a little busy fighting with her new ragtag group of rebels and might want a quiet semi-retirement.
From the Marvel Universe
Skills: She has military experience, which would come in handy, especially since she has used some of that on space missions. She’s also incredibly powerful; she can fly and shoot energy blasts so, she’s capable of handling problems that come her way.
Potential Problems: Like many superheroes, she doesn’t always respond well to government authority and, depending on what tasks she’s ask to do, could very well go rogue and do her own thing.
From the BBC TV show “Doctor Who”
Skills: The Doctor already has a time-traveling spaceship that can go anywhere in the universe, along with a plethora of scientific tools. He is strong on diplomatic solutions and always believes the best of humanity.
Potential Problems: The Doctor tends to favor the U.K. over the U.S. when it comes to Earth. He has a strong anti-war stance and would likely decline any leadership offer extended.
From the DC Universe
Skills: Martian Manhunter’s superpowers include flight, telepathy and shape-shifting, just to name two. Being from Mars, he has space experience.
Potential Problems: There isn’t too much to complain about with Martian Manhunter’s appointment, except he could easily become frustrated if people don’t take his advice and follow his agenda.
From Hanna-Barbera Productions
Skills: He’s fought crime in space with his super powers — invisibility, flight and ray blasters — and he has his own talk show. That means he knows how to deal with bad guys and the rich and famous.
Potential Problems: He could have some personality clashes with others in charge because he likes complete authority.
