Faint bluegrass sounds will be heard over the raging waters of the Lochsa, Selway and Clearwater Rivers as fiddlers and stringed instrument players camp out at Three Rivers Resort this weekend.
The 7th annual Idaho Old Time Fiddlers District 9 Campout starts off with a 6:30 p.m. potluck dinner at the resort, 50 miles east of Orofino.“After the potluck we just have a jam,” said Dave Bezdicek, who organized the event with Tom Schotzko. “Musicians pick a tune, and if someone else wants to play it after they play it, they imitate it.”
For those hoping to learn more about stringed instruments, lessons will take place from at 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday for fiddle, mandolin, ukulele and harmonica.
“There’s a real following of people who want to learn the ukulele, so that’s kind of a new twist,” Bezdicek said.
By 2 p.m. Saturday, afternoon jams will start, and at 8 p.m., an evening jam begins. Bezdicek said the District 9 group has a repertoire of between 100 and 200 songs.
District members host a Sunday breakfast and the weekend ends when players tire of jamming.
Bezdicek said the event averages 50 to 60 people, and attendees do not have to participate in playing — just listening.
