Melissa Cole’s mosaic on the pedestrian bridge at the Fifth St. and levee bypass intersection was installed in 2012.
The massive mosaic “Confluence,” featuring colorfully tiled salmon, a snake and other river designs by Spokane artist Melissa Cole, won the Juror’s Choice Award at the Mosaic Arts International Exhibit taking place this week in Houston, Texas. The annual show is sponsored by the Society of American Mosaic Artists.
Giulio Menossi, an internationally recognized Italian mosaic artist, selected Cole’s ambitious series of 155 sculpted panels for the award, according to a press statement from the society. The mosaic adorns a pedestrian bridge spanning U.S. Highway 12 at the intersection of Fifth Street and the levee bypass. Menossi called it an, “Interesting project to revive and give life to a structure, otherwise without any interest…a perfect integration of landscape…a network…a road and the sky.”‘
The mosaic was installed in Lewiston in 2012 as part of a downtown improvement project. Acrylic paintings by Cole will be on display May 1-25 at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. An opening reception with the artist is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 8.
